Allergy Problems Post Hurricane IrmaHurricane Irma has caused its destruction, but unfortunately for those with allergies this may only be
the beginning of their problems. Excessive flooding that followed Irma could cause increased exposure to indoor mold. For
patients with allergies this could mean, increased respiratory symptoms of sneezing, cough, congestion as well as a surge
of infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis and even pneumonia. Approximately one third of patients with allergies are sensitive
to mold. Mold can even cause patients without allergies to have respiratory problems as well. Those with compromised immune
systems or severe lung disease with COPD or asthma are at greater risk of severe health problems, including pneumonia, which
may be caused by mold. We may also see a spike in pollen allergies due to the excessive moisture left by the storm. It is
important for patients to get tested to see if they have allergies to help them avoid problems. If positive, avoidance measures
and appropriate medications can protect them from the onslaught of what is soon to come.
